Types of Beer

What is the difference?

In general all beers can be divided into two main categories comprising lagers and ales. Lagers, which require a bottom fermenting yeast, originated on the European continent and come in a variety of styles such as Pilsener, Maerzen, Vienna, Munich, Bock and Dopplebock, and Helles or Blonde. They are typically associated with Germany, Czechoslovakia, Holland and Denmark, four major centers of brewing that have popularized products in North America with trendy import styles of lager.

Ales, made using top fermenting yeast strains, are more often thought of as English in origin and style. The most popular styles being Pale ales, Stouts, Bitter, Amber and Porters. In a recent survey done by the Association of Brewers, Pale ale, followed by Amber/ red beer, Porter and European Pilsener were the most popular styles produced. Specialty beers, fruit beers, seasonal and non-alcoholic brews such as root beer are also popular fillers to a brewery’s product line.
